Upper Back Pain:New Approach Introduced By A West Hartford Doctor

Most folks that experience Upper Back Pain, acknowledge that the pain is felt between the shoulder blades, on top of your shoulders, and can also be in one side of the upper back. Most folks feel continuous muscle tension and spasm and/or a dull pain with bouts of burning type pain. The result of this discomfort is a reduced ability to turn your head, irritability (pain can make you act differently and affect concentration) and harder to work at the computer.

Because, most chiropractors  in West Hartford and surrounding area are of the conventional variety, I think a great place to start would be to define what is considered conventional chiropractic care. Conventional chiropractic care has the following goals: Decrease Muscle Spasm, Increase Range of Motion,Reduce Pain. This is what most conventional chiropractors offer in the way of care, and I believe that most of these folks do a great job at what they do.

Unlike traditional chiropractors, here at Advanced Chiropractic, we focus on Structural Correction by utilizing S.C.I, Structural Rehabilitation and Complementary Recommendations in an effort to correct AHS (Anterior Head Syndrome).

We're all familiar with normal body temperature: 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. How do we known when someone has abnormal blood pressure? For that matter, how do we know when air pressure in our tires is low? The only way to appreciate abnormal - is to know normal.

When it comes to normal, we're not expecting anyone to be perfect. However, if your head is displaced 30mm beyond what's considered acceptable, you have Anterior Head Syndrome. Your head shifting forward is no different than your care being forced out of proper alignment, or the foundation of your house sinking a few inches.

Because the underlying structure has been shifted (regardless of reason), this deviation of your skull puts abnormal stress on your muscles, tendons, ligaments, spinal bones, and disc - forcing them to degenerate(damage) which makes them less functional.

Now, some people who's foundation dropped by a few inches this would cause their floors to creak or cracks in the drywall. The traditional doctor would put a few extra nails in the floor boards and patch up the cracks in the dry wall.

What would you do FIRST if it where your foundation? You would probably hire someone who focuses on structural problems, come to your home and fix your foundation. After that, and after a little work on the Secondary effects from the shift in the foundation, you're good to go. Does this make sense?

To understand what we do, and how what we do is DIFFERENT, let's start off by talking about what is considered NORMAL STRUCTURE. As you can see on our Strong Foundation Poster, from the side your spine should have three curves, and your ear should line up over your shoulders and shoulders over the hips and finally your hips over your ankles.

At first, minor abnormal shifts of the areas of the spine are nothing to worry about. No one has absolutely 100% perfect alignment. However, no different than blood pressure, eyesight, normal weight and normal blood pressure, there is a range that is acceptable and what's unacceptable.

If your structural shifts are outside what's considered normal, then you will experience one or more of what we refer to as Secondary Condition or symptoms. The reason we call them Secondary , because they are a result of a Primary Condition or an underlying cause. One Secondary Condition is caused Upper Back Pain and is a result of the Primary Condition Anterior Head Syndrome.

Your head weighs as much as a bowling ball 12 to 16 pounds. Now picture yourself holding a bowling ball close to your chest, then extend your arms fully. Which position do think holding the bowling ball would be hardest? Correct, the extended position. When your head has shifted abnormally anterior or forward this places continuous harsh pressures on your muscles, spinal bones, ligaments, tendons and nerves, causing Mid Back Pain.

There are four signs that are clear indicators of Anterior Head Syndrome. These indicators are not related to age, or genetics. They are a result of trauma, repetitive micro trauma, and chemical/ emotional stress that have disrupted the normal function of they spine. They include: 1). Anterior head Syndrome, 2.) Degenerated (damaged) Vertebrae 3.) Nerve Impingement Syndrome 4.) Degenerated (damaged) Disc.

As I mentioned earlier, here at Advanced Chiropractic, we focus on structural correction of the spine. We do this by utlizing gentle specific spinal adjusting methods with our S.C.I. (one of the tools we use), which are followed by post- adjustment Structural Rehabilitation on our remodeling tables and complementary requirements that you do on your own.

Here's how correcting AHS helps with upper back pain, once your skull is position with in normal range over your shoulders this relieves the abnormal pressures on your spinal bones, discs, muscles and nerves, thus relieving your upper back pain.

There is much more to our solution, for additional information call 860.523.5465

Degenerated Disc: Unique West Hartford Doctors Approach

Most folks assume that degenerated (damaged) #disc are a direct result of the aging process or related to their genes (Grand mom has a granny hump, mom has a granny hump, so I will have a granny hump). Which is the furthest from fact as stating the earth is flat. Degenerated (damaged) discs are a result of a structural shift of the spine that is outside normal range, regardless of what caused the structural shift of the spinal bones in the first place.

Think of a car tire out of alignment, the abnormal alignment causes the uneven wear (damage) to the tires. You would not simply replace the tire without first correcting the abnormal shift in the structure of your car's wheel.

Because most chiropractors in this area are of the traditional variety, I think a great place to start would be to define what is considered  "traditional chiropractic" care.

Traditional chiropractic has the following goals:

  • Decrease muscular spasm
  • Increase range of motion
  • Reduce Pain
This is what MOST chiropractors in #West Hartford and the Farmington Valley offer in the way of care, and I believe that most folks do a great job at what they do.

Unlike traditional chiropractors, here at #Advanced Chiropractic, we focus on Structural Correction by utilizing gentle specific spinal corrections, structural remodeling and complementary recommendations in an effort to correct your structure.

The above is a picture of a normal spine and an abnormal spine that has the primary condition of Anterior Head Syndrome. Just like blood pressure or eyesight their are normals, just like the normal range of the spine. Think of your house if it had an un level foundation. Would you expect cracks in the wall, or a creaky floor? Of course, now most would patch the wall and nail the floor, but that is really not getting to the underlying problem.

We would first correct the foundation and then work on the secondary effects, which leads to a longer lasting correction with out the same problems arising over and over again.

Now think of a Degenerated /damaged disc, this is usually caused by a structural shift of the spine. This unhealthy loading of harsh forces causes the change in disc height, and degeneration of spinal bones. Which will also cause continuous muscle tension and muscle spasm. Think of a bowling ball, your head weighs as much as a bowling ball, when you have AHS of greater than an inch this creates 10 to 20 pounds additional force to your discs.

The indicators I look for a AHS or structural shift in the spine are:
  1. Anterior Head Syndrome
  2. Degenerated Vertebrae (damaged)
  3. Nerve Impingement Syndrome
  4. Muscular tension/spasm
  5. Degenerated Damaged Disc
Having just one indicates a structural problem, having more than one increases the severity. These indicators are not the result of genetics or age, they are the result of traumas (repetitive), accidents, unmanned stress  and improper bio mechanics.

There is more than one way to cook an egg, and it is not my intention to give you my opinion on all the different options you have for treating a damaged disc. I want you to have the information to make a good decision for your health.

More often than not, the first step is prescription medication. If that doesn't work out, the next step is physical therapy, nerve injections, and in many cases if they do not work out then more invasive procedures.

Our focus at Advanced Chiropractic is to direct your spine to what's considered normal. By doing so, this will relieve pressure to your discs, which will subsequently relieve pressure to your nerves, thus improving your #neck pain or #back pain.

Once we correct your neck or back into the normal range this reduces the pressure off the discs and back onto the spinal bones where the pressure is meant to be carried. It's easy to understand.

New Approach To Back Pain: What Is Structural Correction?

West Hartford folks who suffer from chronic low back pain have various approaches to deal with their pain.  Usually the low back pain started out as an occasional annoyance that gradually increased to more frequent painful intervals and for some can lead to debilitating chronic pain and disability.
A new approach unlike conventional chiropractors, physical therapist and massage therapists, we focus on Structural Correction of the spine by utilizing specific spinal corrections, structural remodeling and complementary recommendations in an effort to correct abnormal Structural Shifts of the spine.

Normal vs Abnormal

We're all familiar with normal body temperature: 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. How do we know when someone has abnormal eyesight? How do we know when someone has an irregular heartbeat? How do we know when someone has abnormal blood pressure? For that matter how do we know when the air pressure in our tires is low? The only way to appreciate abnormal - is to know normal.

When it comes to normal, we're not expecting anyone to be perfect. However, if your head is displaced 30mm beyond what's considered acceptable, you have Anterior Head Syndrome (A primary Abnormal Structural Shift of the spine). Your head shifting forward is no different than your car being forced out of alignment, or the foundation of your house sinking on one side by just a couple of inches. Because, the underlying structure has shifted (regardless of the reason), this deviation of your skull puts abnormal stress on your muscles, tendons, spinal bones, and discs - forcing them to degenerate (damaged).

What would happen if the foundation of your house sunk down just a couple of inches? Would it be reasonable that the floor boards would creak? Would you expect to see cracks in the drywall?

As you probably guessed, the PROBLEM is a structural shift-but in this case, of the foundation of your house. Traditional doctors regardless of what area of healthcare they fall, typically look to manage the Secondary Conditions- which we will get to in a minute, rather than focusing on the underlying cause.

The traditional doctor would put an extra nail in the floor boards, wd-40 on the window tract and patch the drywall. Will all of those measures FIX the problem?

What would you do FIRST if it were YOUR home? You would hire a person to fix your foundation, especially someone who focuses on structural correction. After that, and a little work on the secondary effects from the shift of the foundation, you're good to go.

Lets take a look at low back pain...
To understand what we do, and how what we do is New and Different, let's first start off by talking about what is considered Normal Structure spinal alignment and what's considered ABNORMAL spinal alignment.
As you can see by reviewing this picture, the sections of the body should be balanced no different than stacks of blocks.

At first, minor abnormal shifts of areas of the spine are nothing to worry about. No one has absolutely 100% perfect alignment. However like blood pressure, eyesight, cholesterol - there is a normal range.

If your structural shift are outside what's considered normal, then you will experience one or more of what we refer to as Secondary Conditions, in this low back pain. We call low back pain secondary because, as you may have guess is the result of a abnormal primary structural condition.

Think of low back pain like this, if your nerves carried a signal that came from your satellite dish and traveled to the box on your TV. If there is some kind of blockage that interferes with the signal, what would you expect to see on your tv screen? Thinking on those same lines, what would you expect to happen if a spinal segmental shifted and put pressure on a nerve?

As your head shifts forward beyond its center of balance, it creates a continuous strain on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments primarily in the upper part of the spine, but also down into the mid and lower regions of the torso. This stress results in degeneration of spinal bones, discs, and pain.

What we look for that indicates an abnormal structural shift?

There are four signs that clearly indicators of a structural shift. These indicators are not related to age or genetics. They are a result of trauma, abnormal loading, and failure to adapt to physical and emotion stress that have disrupted the normal function of the spine.

They include:

  1. Damaged/degenerated discs
  2. Damaged/degenerated spinal bones
  3. muscle spasm/tension
  4. Nerve impingement syndrome
How we look for these indicators, we use perform a Structural Examination with Structural Corrective Radiographys, a Digital Photographic Assessment and Structural Analysis using Balance machine.

More than one way to cook an egg, here are the more commonly used solutions...
  1. Over the counter medication
  2. Prescription medication, pain killers, muscle relaxers
  3. Massage, Physical Therapy and Conventional Chiropractic (their goals are to increase range of motion, decrease pain and decrease muscle spasm - and they do a good job at their goals)
  4. Pain management - very strong pain killers
  5. Surgeries, from disc ectomies (a partical removal of the disc) or Fusions of the bones with total removal of the disc.
  6. Future surgeries are common
What we do at Advanced Chiropractic...

My goal is to direct your spine to what's considered normal. By doing so, this will relieve pressure on the discs, which will subsequently will relieve pressure on the nerves, thus relieving your low back pain.

This is how correcting abnormal spinal structure will improve low back pain. Once we have the normal weight bearing curves in your low back - this takes the harsh forces of gravity and evenly distributes the forces through out the spine, which in turn relieves the pressure off the disc and nerves. This allows your low back pain to be relieved.

Our plan of care is based on what we find on the structural examination and is customized for each patient and their condition - this is not cookie cutter and will require certain complementary recommendations to enhance your care in our office.

Degenerated (Damaged) Low Back Discs: Why Back Pain Becomes Chronic?

Folks of West Hartford, It's Easy To Understand, remember back in High School biology class, you probably saw a human skeleton in the corner (maybe even decorated for the holidays). As you looked closer at the skeleton, you saw many bones that look very organized. Even the spine (back bone) had curves, a large curve in the low back with a gradual curve in the mid back and finally a curve in the neck.

Think SLINKY (more than a wonderful toy).

The SLINKY is flexible, bendy and can stretch very far from end to end. The reason why the SLINKY can do all it's entertaining tricks is because of it's CURVES. The curves provide the flexibility. Your spine MUST have NORMAL STRUCTURE aka normal curves to be flexible.

Stiff as a board or Flexible as flower?

When you lose your normal structure of your spine, your spine becomes less flexible causing degeneration(damage) in your spinal discs and degeneration (damage)to your vertebrae (spinal bones).
This degeneration of your discs and bones leads to chronic low back pain, neck pain, upper back pain and headaches just to name a few.

At Advanced Chiropractic, we want you to know that we are not a conventional chiropractor, so let me explain the difference.

"Conventional Chiropractors" have three goals;

  1. Decrease Muscular spasm
  2. Increase range of motion
  3. reduce pain
This is what MOST conventional chiropractors offer in the way of care, and I believe that most of these folks do a great job at what they do.

Unlike conventional chiropractors, here at Advanced Chiropractic, we focus on Structural Correction by utilizing, specific spinal corrections, structural remodeling tables, and complementary recommendations in an effort to correct abnormal structural shifts of the spine.

When it comes to normal, we're not expecting anyone to be perfect. However, if your head is displaced more than 30mm (Objective Indicator) beyond what's considered acceptable, you have Anterior Head Syndrome a abnormal structural shift of the spine. Your head shifting forward is no different than your car being forced out of alignment, foundation of your house sinking on one side by just a couple of inches.

How do you think your car will ride, and what damage will be done to your house because of the foundation?  This abnormal shift in your spine causes these Secondary Conditions, for example degenerated discs, low back pain, neck pain, sciatic and headaches.

Now, would you just put a nail in the squeaky floor or a new tire on the car or would dig a little deeper to correct the Mal-alignment of the car and correct the UN-balance in your foundation? What would you folks do first if it were your home or your car?

You would get someone to fix the foundation and correct the car alignment, because you KNOW if that is NOT done you will have these Secondary Conditions... back pain, degeneration of the discs, degeneration of the bones, etc.

If you have low back pain, then of course we will be looking to see if you have the normal curve in the low back, if your pelvis is level and if you have Anterior Head Syndrome. All these abnormalities put harsh pressures on the discs and cause pain.

Indicators

There are four signs that are clear indicators of a Structural Shift. These indicators are not related to age or genetics. They are a result of physical trauma, chemical toxins (processed foods, chemicals, etc.) and unadapted stress (we all have stress, this is normal, yet when not coped with this becomes a problem) that have disrupted the normal function of the spine. They include

  1. Anterior Head Syndrome
  2. Degenerated disc
  3. Degenerated bone
  4. Nerve Impingement Syndrome

 Structural Examination

We take Structural Corrective Radiography's, most conventional chiropractors do not (because it is not necessary for their goals) - these films will determine the presence of degenerated bones and discs as well as show Anterior Head Syndrome and will show any abnormal structural shift in the curves.

Then we use a Structural Anaylsis Machine that will indentify abnormal loading of the spine (unbalanced) and then we use Digital Structural Photography, which will confirm any Anterior Head Syndrome and other structural shifts of the spine.

More than one way to cook an egg

We are not your only option, there are many and we only offer Structural Correction. During your consult we will go over in detail what all your options are and what exactly we do in our office to help you.

Our goal for you

Is to direct your spine to what's considered normal. By doing so, this will relieve pressure on the discs, which subsequently will relieve pressure on the nerves, thus improving or correcting your abnormal structural shift.

So, if you have low back pain, when we move your lumbar spine (low back) into a normal range this relieves the pressure to your discs and nerves which will then relieve your pain.

If this makes sense to you, then call our office at 860.523.5465 and schedule for your complimentary consult or our group presentation called, Chiropractic:101.

When you schedule for either we will have a Gift Certificate waiting for your for $50.00 off our Structural Examination and will also include our Structural Correction with any Structural Rehab. This is a thank you for reading our blog.

Do You Really Have To Do An Exam: Would You Buy A House Without First Looking Inside?

A prospective patient called and asked, " Do You Really Have To Do An Exam" ?
Great question, since I get the wow - response when I let our patients know how long and exactly what our examination entails.

Our examination includes Structural Corrective Radiography's, taken in the standing position. This is important because it's best to visualize Structural Shifts while weight bearing or standing.

Laying down reduces these abnormal shifts or "hides" the true picture. The Structural Corrective Analysis, is the process we use to measure in degrees and millimeters the abnormal Structural Shift. (No one has a perfect spine, yet their is a normal range.)

Image

For example if your skull is translated anterior in regards to your thorax more than an inch - this is abnormal. Or in simpler terms, if you have a goosed neck look more than an inch - this is abnormal.

Our Digital Structural Analysis, involves unique software that measures normal from abnormal from digital pictures. So, we get a good look of what you present with and then a better look at the inner frame work, your spine with the Structural Corrective Radiography's - basically looking at you from head to toe and inside and out.

Through I know, this helps get it right the first time.We follow up with a detailed functional exam, Structure and Function are related. If abnormal spinal structural shift is present, this can effect the function of your nerves, muscles and how well you move. So, we do look at your Range of Motion, Orthopedic and Neurological checks - which include more than 30 different checks. And of course our palpation exam, where we feel the areas effected; looking for muscle spasm, tenderness, heat or redness (as with inflammation).

To answer the question: Why is do the exam?

Because, the examination provides us with the vital information to tailor a specific Initial Phase of Care that fits your condition. We are not baking a cake, we are working with an individual and our plan must benefit the uniqueness of the individual.

We are not an assembly line type of practice that is so common today.Plus, our recommendations involve not only our practice, but what you need to do on your own... as well as what you must avoid to regain or enhance your health.

We plan for you what you need to do the other 23 hours of the day you are not in our office. But, all this begins with your consultation an our Structural Corrective Examination.

Have a GREAT Day!

Breast Augmentation: What Else Enhances The New You?

Breast augmentation is common and has many beneficial outcomes. In my practice I have seen breast reductions just as often as I have seen breast enhancements. What is common for both situations is a desire to look and feel better.
So what is a Chiropractor who focuses on Structural Correction of the spine talking about breast augmentation?
Good question. Please read on.

Back pain, as you can image for women with breasts that are considered out of proportion with the rest of their features plays a significant role in back pain, along with the social and mental aspects. It's much more than bad posture especially,  if the woman developed early in life (early bloomer) compared to her class mates.  This causes usually a rounded shoulder, hunched look - in an ill attempt to "hide" her breast development (out of fear of attention and criticism).
Image
How Strong Is Your Foundation? Normal is on the Left abnormal is on your right.
Image
Our patient post breast augmentation (breast reduction), with an abnormal structural shift of her mid back (thoracic spine).
Black LINE indicates NORMAL the RED Line is where she was and is ABNORMAL
As the old saying goes, "as the twig is bent, so grows the tree".
The young girl grows into a young women with the pronounced rounded shoulders and hunched back. This is NOT just bad posture. These young women have changed the shape of their normal spinal structure to outside the normal range. Even with the breast augmentation, the abnormal spinal shift remains and detracts from the over all ascetic of the young women form.

See the example below:

We've all seen a spine before and I'll guess the last time you have seen a spine was probably your  High School Biology class.
The example to the left is a BEFORE Standing Neutral lateral radiography of the Thoracic spine - just means this is the side view of a patients mid back.
At the top, where the number 2 or Second Thoracic vertebra is located- is the very top of your thoracic spine (mid back), and down by the number 10 or tenth thoracic vertebra is the lower portion of the mid back.
To the right is the anterior or where your chest is, to the left is the posterior or back.

What's Normal?

Normal range for the thoracic spine (mid back) is the black line.  The red dashed line is abnormal, the red arrows indicate Degenerative Disc and Joint Disease or Osteoarthritis. Notice the disc spacing between the vertebrae (back bone) at the levels 7 & 8 & 9 - notice how thin the spacing appears.

This young female patient had moderate to sever mid back pain, and she had moderate hunch back or granny hump appearance, which is the primary reason she sought out our unique focus of care.  Even after she had her breast reduction surgery.

How she appeared and her health are big factors for her, much like teeth on a child or adult when they are crooked. The Orthodontists straightens the teeth to function better AND have a pleasing smile as well. Same principle with our care, to Structurally Correct for Optimum Health and to enhance your symmetry, which is ascetically desirable.  The surgeons with their skills reduced the patients breast significantly - however the structural damage was done. The breast reduction helped tremendously (and I recommended this procedure), yet our care enhanced the total outcome the patient desired.
This AFTER Radiographic (X-ray) study of the same female patient AFTER her Initial Phase of Care that was customized to her needs.
Image
Normal

Look at the Dramatic difference. And as a bonus to the patient look at the spacing between 5 & 6 - 8, all gained height.

The patients symptoms or as I call them Secondary Conditions, the reason I use the word Secondary because they are a result of the Primary Abnormal Structural Shift of the Thoracic spine.

In other words, her mid back was outside the normal range causing increased pressure on her discs, stress and strain to the muscles, ligaments and obviously the bones.
Image
This Primary Condition Anterior Head Syndrome, also distracts from the ascetics of our patient (the goosed neck appearance).
But this is only half the story you see, the spine is like links in a chain, if one link or section of links are abnormal this can effect the other section- just look at the Radiography of the Cervical Spine or neck, which was contributing to this patients mid back pain and appearance.

As you know this is the side view BEFORE radiography of our patients cervical spine, and as you can already tell the black line is normal and the red line is abnormal.
Because of the abnormal structural shift (Anterior Head Syndrome) of the skull relative to our patients thoracic, or the classic goosed neck" appearance - this causes abnormal forces or increased weight, by at least 10 pounds(the weight of a bowling ball) to primarily the neck but also the mid back. In other words if I just looked at her mid back and not her ENTIRE spine, then the most important piece of the puzzle would of been missed - leading to a less than ideal out come for our patient.

What our patients come to understand, and we realize that most patients want the "patch up job" - yet, once they have had a few patches, they look for something more in line with our service, which is Structural Corrective Chiropractic Care. I'm not saying our care is better, what I will say we have a different focus that our patients appreciate.

Young women, girls are more and more at risk because of our modern life style (Texting, computer games), which leads to a commonly called structural condition called Texting Neck or Anterior Head Syndrome

Our focus is to correct this abnormal structure so you or your child can live pain free, look their optimum and function normally.  It's easy to understand, once your spine is in the normal range, this gives your body the chance to heal. The tension is no longer on the bones, muscle, disc and nerves.

Think of your satellite dish on your house and the wires that run to the box on your tv, if those wires are interfered with - what do you think the signal would be... blurry right.
Well, this is similar to what happened in our case above when her spine was abnormal.... this caused interference, and  the inference had accumulated over a long period of time, resulting in  Secondary Conditions, such as; Headaches, TMJ and Mid Back pain along with a dramatic disadvantageous appearance.

Our focus is to detect and then correct abnormal structure of the spine in girls and young women to help them function optimally and enhance their look. We do this well and is all we do - we do not dabble in other procedures(which is an option many (not all)of my colleagues like to offer), we focus exclusively on structural correction.

Have a GREAT Day!
