Pinched Nerve (N.I.S.):West Hartford Doctor's New Approach?

It's much more than just your posture. Abnormal shifts or deviations within the inner frame work of the body may be the true cause of this common Secondary Condition (Symptom):

Pinched Nerve (N.I.S.)

We all know that the human body has a normal temperature, a normal range for blood pressure, and normal eyesight, but most of us are unaware that the same applies when it comes to the inner framework of the body.

We focus on Structural Correction, which is a branch of chiropractic that specifically deals with these spinal deviations and can work with you so those little "once in a while" issues don't turn into a major debilitating condition.

Normal Structure is not an option. Restoring and protecting your body's normal structural alignment is a key factor in maintaining optimal health and wellness.

Traditional chiropractors look to decrease your pain, increase your range of motion and decrease pain. And I have no doubt they accomplish their goals.

Other common solutions are medications and if that does not work out, then physical therapy. If those do not work out then there is muscle relaxers and stronger pain medication. If this does not work out then as a last resort there is surgery with follow up rehab and usually a future surgery down the road.

At Advanced Chiropractic in West hartford, we focus as I stated above on Structural Correction of the spine. We do this without aggressive spinal manipulation, without you having to believe in chiropractic and we do not claim to cure everything. We have one focus - Structural Correction of the spine.

What we do is different than traditional chiropractic.

We use correcting tools, such as the S.C.I. which has one purpose, Plastic Deformation.

What is Plastic Deformation?

Simply stated, the reason that you have a Structural abnormality is due to a warping of the structures that are responsible for maintaining proper structural alignment. This instrument is designed to direct impulses toward the segments that require attention, thus speeding up the corrective process.

We also use Structural Rehabilitation with our Remodeling tables and Complementary Recommendations that are designed to enhance our care in the office for the other 23 hours of the day you are not in the office.

Upper Back Pain:New Approach Introduced By A West Hartford Doctor

Most folks that experience Upper Back Pain, acknowledge that the pain is felt between the shoulder blades, on top of your shoulders, and can also be in one side of the upper back. Most folks feel continuous muscle tension and spasm and/or a dull pain with bouts of burning type pain. The result of this discomfort is a reduced ability to turn your head, irritability (pain can make you act differently and affect concentration) and harder to work at the computer.

Because, most chiropractors  in West Hartford and surrounding area are of the conventional variety, I think a great place to start would be to define what is considered conventional chiropractic care. Conventional chiropractic care has the following goals: Decrease Muscle Spasm, Increase Range of Motion,Reduce Pain. This is what most conventional chiropractors offer in the way of care, and I believe that most of these folks do a great job at what they do.

Unlike traditional chiropractors, here at Advanced Chiropractic, we focus on Structural Correction by utilizing S.C.I, Structural Rehabilitation and Complementary Recommendations in an effort to correct AHS (Anterior Head Syndrome).

We're all familiar with normal body temperature: 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. How do we known when someone has abnormal blood pressure? For that matter, how do we know when air pressure in our tires is low? The only way to appreciate abnormal - is to know normal.

When it comes to normal, we're not expecting anyone to be perfect. However, if your head is displaced 30mm beyond what's considered acceptable, you have Anterior Head Syndrome. Your head shifting forward is no different than your care being forced out of proper alignment, or the foundation of your house sinking a few inches.

Because the underlying structure has been shifted (regardless of reason), this deviation of your skull puts abnormal stress on your muscles, tendons, ligaments, spinal bones, and disc - forcing them to degenerate(damage) which makes them less functional.

Now, some people who's foundation dropped by a few inches this would cause their floors to creak or cracks in the drywall. The traditional doctor would put a few extra nails in the floor boards and patch up the cracks in the dry wall.

What would you do FIRST if it where your foundation? You would probably hire someone who focuses on structural problems, come to your home and fix your foundation. After that, and after a little work on the Secondary effects from the shift in the foundation, you're good to go. Does this make sense?

To understand what we do, and how what we do is DIFFERENT, let's start off by talking about what is considered NORMAL STRUCTURE. As you can see on our Strong Foundation Poster, from the side your spine should have three curves, and your ear should line up over your shoulders and shoulders over the hips and finally your hips over your ankles.

At first, minor abnormal shifts of the areas of the spine are nothing to worry about. No one has absolutely 100% perfect alignment. However, no different than blood pressure, eyesight, normal weight and normal blood pressure, there is a range that is acceptable and what's unacceptable.

If your structural shifts are outside what's considered normal, then you will experience one or more of what we refer to as Secondary Condition or symptoms. The reason we call them Secondary , because they are a result of a Primary Condition or an underlying cause. One Secondary Condition is caused Upper Back Pain and is a result of the Primary Condition Anterior Head Syndrome.

Your head weighs as much as a bowling ball 12 to 16 pounds. Now picture yourself holding a bowling ball close to your chest, then extend your arms fully. Which position do think holding the bowling ball would be hardest? Correct, the extended position. When your head has shifted abnormally anterior or forward this places continuous harsh pressures on your muscles, spinal bones, ligaments, tendons and nerves, causing Mid Back Pain.

There are four signs that are clear indicators of Anterior Head Syndrome. These indicators are not related to age, or genetics. They are a result of trauma, repetitive micro trauma, and chemical/ emotional stress that have disrupted the normal function of they spine. They include: 1). Anterior head Syndrome, 2.) Degenerated (damaged) Vertebrae 3.) Nerve Impingement Syndrome 4.) Degenerated (damaged) Disc.

As I mentioned earlier, here at Advanced Chiropractic, we focus on structural correction of the spine. We do this by utlizing gentle specific spinal adjusting methods with our S.C.I. (one of the tools we use), which are followed by post- adjustment Structural Rehabilitation on our remodeling tables and complementary requirements that you do on your own.

Here's how correcting AHS helps with upper back pain, once your skull is position with in normal range over your shoulders this relieves the abnormal pressures on your spinal bones, discs, muscles and nerves, thus relieving your upper back pain.

Degenerated Disc: Unique West Hartford Doctors Approach

Most folks assume that degenerated (damaged) #disc are a direct result of the aging process or related to their genes (Grand mom has a granny hump, mom has a granny hump, so I will have a granny hump). Which is the furthest from fact as stating the earth is flat. Degenerated (damaged) discs are a result of a structural shift of the spine that is outside normal range, regardless of what caused the structural shift of the spinal bones in the first place.

Think of a car tire out of alignment, the abnormal alignment causes the uneven wear (damage) to the tires. You would not simply replace the tire without first correcting the abnormal shift in the structure of your car's wheel.

Because most chiropractors in this area are of the traditional variety, I think a great place to start would be to define what is considered  "traditional chiropractic" care.

Traditional chiropractic has the following goals:

  • Decrease muscular spasm
  • Increase range of motion
  • Reduce Pain
This is what MOST chiropractors in #West Hartford and the Farmington Valley offer in the way of care, and I believe that most folks do a great job at what they do.

Unlike traditional chiropractors, here at #Advanced Chiropractic, we focus on Structural Correction by utilizing gentle specific spinal corrections, structural remodeling and complementary recommendations in an effort to correct your structure.

The above is a picture of a normal spine and an abnormal spine that has the primary condition of Anterior Head Syndrome. Just like blood pressure or eyesight their are normals, just like the normal range of the spine. Think of your house if it had an un level foundation. Would you expect cracks in the wall, or a creaky floor? Of course, now most would patch the wall and nail the floor, but that is really not getting to the underlying problem.

We would first correct the foundation and then work on the secondary effects, which leads to a longer lasting correction with out the same problems arising over and over again.

Now think of a Degenerated /damaged disc, this is usually caused by a structural shift of the spine. This unhealthy loading of harsh forces causes the change in disc height, and degeneration of spinal bones. Which will also cause continuous muscle tension and muscle spasm. Think of a bowling ball, your head weighs as much as a bowling ball, when you have AHS of greater than an inch this creates 10 to 20 pounds additional force to your discs.

The indicators I look for a AHS or structural shift in the spine are:
  1. Anterior Head Syndrome
  2. Degenerated Vertebrae (damaged)
  3. Nerve Impingement Syndrome
  4. Muscular tension/spasm
  5. Degenerated Damaged Disc
Having just one indicates a structural problem, having more than one increases the severity. These indicators are not the result of genetics or age, they are the result of traumas (repetitive), accidents, unmanned stress  and improper bio mechanics.

There is more than one way to cook an egg, and it is not my intention to give you my opinion on all the different options you have for treating a damaged disc. I want you to have the information to make a good decision for your health.

More often than not, the first step is prescription medication. If that doesn't work out, the next step is physical therapy, nerve injections, and in many cases if they do not work out then more invasive procedures.

Our focus at Advanced Chiropractic is to direct your spine to what's considered normal. By doing so, this will relieve pressure to your discs, which will subsequently relieve pressure to your nerves, thus improving your #neck pain or #back pain.

Once we correct your neck or back into the normal range this reduces the pressure off the discs and back onto the spinal bones where the pressure is meant to be carried. It's easy to understand.

New Approach To Back Pain: What Is Structural Correction?

West Hartford folks who suffer from chronic low back pain have various approaches to deal with their pain.  Usually the low back pain started out as an occasional annoyance that gradually increased to more frequent painful intervals and for some can lead to debilitating chronic pain and disability.
A new approach unlike conventional chiropractors, physical therapist and massage therapists, we focus on Structural Correction of the spine by utilizing specific spinal corrections, structural remodeling and complementary recommendations in an effort to correct abnormal Structural Shifts of the spine.

Normal vs Abnormal

We're all familiar with normal body temperature: 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. How do we know when someone has abnormal eyesight? How do we know when someone has an irregular heartbeat? How do we know when someone has abnormal blood pressure? For that matter how do we know when the air pressure in our tires is low? The only way to appreciate abnormal - is to know normal.

When it comes to normal, we're not expecting anyone to be perfect. However, if your head is displaced 30mm beyond what's considered acceptable, you have Anterior Head Syndrome (A primary Abnormal Structural Shift of the spine). Your head shifting forward is no different than your car being forced out of alignment, or the foundation of your house sinking on one side by just a couple of inches. Because, the underlying structure has shifted (regardless of the reason), this deviation of your skull puts abnormal stress on your muscles, tendons, spinal bones, and discs - forcing them to degenerate (damaged).

What would happen if the foundation of your house sunk down just a couple of inches? Would it be reasonable that the floor boards would creak? Would you expect to see cracks in the drywall?

As you probably guessed, the PROBLEM is a structural shift-but in this case, of the foundation of your house. Traditional doctors regardless of what area of healthcare they fall, typically look to manage the Secondary Conditions- which we will get to in a minute, rather than focusing on the underlying cause.

The traditional doctor would put an extra nail in the floor boards, wd-40 on the window tract and patch the drywall. Will all of those measures FIX the problem?

What would you do FIRST if it were YOUR home? You would hire a person to fix your foundation, especially someone who focuses on structural correction. After that, and a little work on the secondary effects from the shift of the foundation, you're good to go.

Lets take a look at low back pain...
To understand what we do, and how what we do is New and Different, let's first start off by talking about what is considered Normal Structure spinal alignment and what's considered ABNORMAL spinal alignment.
As you can see by reviewing this picture, the sections of the body should be balanced no different than stacks of blocks.

At first, minor abnormal shifts of areas of the spine are nothing to worry about. No one has absolutely 100% perfect alignment. However like blood pressure, eyesight, cholesterol - there is a normal range.

If your structural shift are outside what's considered normal, then you will experience one or more of what we refer to as Secondary Conditions, in this low back pain. We call low back pain secondary because, as you may have guess is the result of a abnormal primary structural condition.

Think of low back pain like this, if your nerves carried a signal that came from your satellite dish and traveled to the box on your TV. If there is some kind of blockage that interferes with the signal, what would you expect to see on your tv screen? Thinking on those same lines, what would you expect to happen if a spinal segmental shifted and put pressure on a nerve?

As your head shifts forward beyond its center of balance, it creates a continuous strain on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments primarily in the upper part of the spine, but also down into the mid and lower regions of the torso. This stress results in degeneration of spinal bones, discs, and pain.

What we look for that indicates an abnormal structural shift?

There are four signs that clearly indicators of a structural shift. These indicators are not related to age or genetics. They are a result of trauma, abnormal loading, and failure to adapt to physical and emotion stress that have disrupted the normal function of the spine.

They include:

  1. Damaged/degenerated discs
  2. Damaged/degenerated spinal bones
  3. muscle spasm/tension
  4. Nerve impingement syndrome
How we look for these indicators, we use perform a Structural Examination with Structural Corrective Radiographys, a Digital Photographic Assessment and Structural Analysis using Balance machine.

More than one way to cook an egg, here are the more commonly used solutions...
  1. Over the counter medication
  2. Prescription medication, pain killers, muscle relaxers
  3. Massage, Physical Therapy and Conventional Chiropractic (their goals are to increase range of motion, decrease pain and decrease muscle spasm - and they do a good job at their goals)
  4. Pain management - very strong pain killers
  5. Surgeries, from disc ectomies (a partical removal of the disc) or Fusions of the bones with total removal of the disc.
  6. Future surgeries are common
What we do at Advanced Chiropractic...

My goal is to direct your spine to what's considered normal. By doing so, this will relieve pressure on the discs, which will subsequently will relieve pressure on the nerves, thus relieving your low back pain.

This is how correcting abnormal spinal structure will improve low back pain. Once we have the normal weight bearing curves in your low back - this takes the harsh forces of gravity and evenly distributes the forces through out the spine, which in turn relieves the pressure off the disc and nerves. This allows your low back pain to be relieved.

Our plan of care is based on what we find on the structural examination and is customized for each patient and their condition - this is not cookie cutter and will require certain complementary recommendations to enhance your care in our office.

Optimized Structure For Optimal Performance How Optimized Structure Can Help You Be The Very Best Runner With The Least Amount Injury

Optimized Structure For Optimal Performance How Optimized Structure Can Help You Be The Very Best Runner With The Least Amount Injury

Optimized Structure For Optimal Performance for West Hartford Runners
How Optimized Structure Can Help You Be The Very Best Runner With The Least Amount Of Injuries.
Research says 5,000 steps, with an average person WALKING, generates 640 TONS of force that move through the body at 200MPH+. That's crazy. ANY loss of normal structure is going to show up in runners – there is NO DOUBT, as well as any loss of normal function (and of course they're two sides of the same coin).

1. Optimized Structure dictates Optimized Function (What’s NORMAL)
 Normal’s when you run are:
a.)    Run with a slight forward lean from your ankles
b.)    Toe neutral or down
c.)    Feet must be under or slightly behind hips
d.)   Butt kick
e.)    Mid to forefoot strike
f.)     Hips on a swivel/rotation
g.)    Knee bent
h.)    Run like you are on “egg shells”
What’s Normal Structure? (no one has perfect structure BUT there is a normal range)
  • Slight pronation while you run
  • Heel and ankle in line
  • Normal arch
  • Knee not rotated/twisted
  • Slight anterior tilt of pelvic

2. How strong is your foundation?
Foundation of your body begins at the feet and extends past the knees to the hips; these are the crucial areas that must remain free of abnormal structural shifts. No one has perfect structure, just as in blood pressure and heart rate there are normal ranges. Normal ranges for your structure of feet, knees, hips and spine are crucial for enhanced performance and injury avoidance.

Arches in the feet, low, mid, upper and neck all designed to take the compressive forces. Your Structure if deficient will exacerbate any problems you have in your running form or techniques and your weak spots will become apparent.

3. What are the indicators of poor structure that eventually lead to injuries?

Tell tale indicators:
Taping for swelling, injuries etc are all well and good, but those are all signs of structural abnormalities in the body, of course.
Abnormal shoe wear (back of heel or sides of heel /outside)
Abnormal structural shifts of the feet (over pronated or supinated)
Anatomical leg length deficiencies or pelvis unleveling (also crucial with cyclists)
Most common and most over looked: Abnormal structural shift of the head relative to the hips

Unable for total knee extension
(AHS or Anterior Head Syndrome)
Leaning at the waist or anterior head lean (LBP,SIJ, Ilio Tibial Band)
Toe up (heel strike/plantar fasciitis, tibialis anterior over worked causing shin splints)

Feet in front of hips (heel strike, ankle, knee, hip or SIJ, LBP – TMJ)
Heel striking (caused by straight up running, feet not under pelvis)
Pounding gait “pounding pavement” hips locked

4. What Strategies you can implement to enhance your performance and avoid injuries?

Running evaluation by a seasoned veteran (Fleet Feet)
Running techniques and drills while you run (butt kicks)
Proper tools for the job ( Shoes to address foot deviations Taping with proprioceptive tape)
Strength training – lifting weights, squats, kettle bell swings, lunges
Correct Anterior Head Syndrome (Your head leads your body)
Tape is EXCELLENT support, but it does NOT solve problems. It gives the body extra proprioceptive input to make it more receptive to structural correction and it's a good therapeutic support 24 hours a day between visits

5. Conclusion....

Have your gait evaluated. Structure and Function matters, and will eventually if left unchecked wear at normal structure. When normal structure is deficient this will lead to abnormal function. This becomes painful cycle.

Proper running technique, gear, training (with appropriate rest and strength training incorporated), correcting AHS (Anterior Head Syndrome) and incorporating an anti –inflammatory diet will help you be the very best runner with the least amount of injuries.

New Approach To Neck Pain: Why Structural Corrective X-rays?

We are not a conventional chiropractic or physical therapy office, they are nice folks and I have no doubt that they all do a good job with their patients. What we do is different than the conventional, we focus on a branch of chiropractic called Structural Correction.

The following is a patient question that I thought would be beneficial to this post, enjoy...

Patient Question: Other doctors never took x-rays of my spine, why do you?

Me: We focus on Structural Correction which is a branch of Chiropractic that is different than Conventional Chiropractic.

Just like there is a normal blood pressure or normal eye sight, there is a normal range for your spine - not perfection, yet normal range none the less.

We need to know exactly where your spine has shifted abnormally and use Structural Corrective Radiographys (x-rays) with our Structural analysis to determine severity and determine our plan of action.

Most conventional chiropractors and physical therapists, do not use x-rays to determine structural shifts, they are focused on other goals - which is all well and good, we prefer to dig a little deeper.

And...

Would you buy a house without looking inside first? I like to know for sure what your spine looks like before I come up with a plan to correct your spine, to me this just makes sense.

The Normal Structure picture is what any knowledgeable health care provider, be it a neurosurgeon, structural chiropractor or orthopedists all can agree is normal structure.

Neck pain is a Secondary Condition that is usually a result of a Primary Condition of abnormal structure. The difference in our focus is to detect this abnormal structure and then correct the abnormal structure. When we correct the structure Secondary Conditions, such as Neck pain resolve.

Why?

Because, harsh pressures are exerted on your spine, discs, muscles, ligaments and nerves causing damage (degeneration) and pain. When we correct the structure these abnormal pressures are relieved allowing your body to continue healing in the appropriate ways. This is why we dig a little deeper, and to tell you no amount of massage, stretching, strengthening will ever correct an abnormal spine. Only a Structural Chiropractor, who focuses on structural correction can assist you.

Advanced Chiropractic is the only Structural Chiropractor in West Hartford and the Farmington Valley. We have two ways where you can gain additional information, the first is our Chiropractic:101 group presentation. This presentation is a non-formal chat about Traditional Chiropractic vs.Structural Chiropractic and other Myths and Facts you need to know to make an informed decision.

The other option is a private, Complimentary Consultation, which is a conversation and not a commitment. This is where you can tells us what you are experiencing and where we can show you exactly how we work with patients.

We go over...

  • Time in the office,
  • How long,
  • What type of discomfort if any,
  • Why we use specific corrections vs. aggressive spinal manipulations,
  • Insurance, payment options, etc.
  • We go over other common solutions and then answer any of your questions

Side note:

When you come in for the Chiropractic:101 group presentation or private complimentary Structural Consult, we will present you with a gift certificate for $50 off our Structural Examination, our way of thanking you for taking your time to see our solution.

Have a GREAT Day!

Screwed...Literally

Screwed... Literally

I meet folks in West Hartford who are skeptical about conventional chiropractic care and I do not blame them.

We are NOT a conventional Chiropractic office, we focus on a branch of Chiropractic called Structural Correction. Here is the big difference between Conventional and Structural Chiropractic.
As you know we DO not use aggressive manipulations, or ask you to "believe" in chiropractic or claim to cure everything.  And many like our approach, they say it just makes sense and is reasonable.

The picture above is that of an unfortunate patient (not at our office) that has under gone major back surgery. Now, after seeing that picture, there is nothing in my office that should scare, intimidate or even cause you to take pause.

What I can say after my years of experience is this; "uncorrected spinal structure will cause damage and degenerate spinal structures which for some will cause major debilitating consequences".

We do Structural Chiropractic to correct abnormal structure from degenerating to such a point where this surgery was performed.

We use two different instruments, a handheld Correcting instrument and our Structural Corrective Table. Again, most conventional chiropractors use their hands with a non-specifc general manipulations - which are safe.

Our goal or focus is structural correction, with that in mind we need to be specific and realize not every vertebra (back bone) needs to be corrected. Our technique is similar to fine tuning of a grand piano vs  using a sledge hammer to persuade a piece of concrete. Specific, gentle with a less is more mindset to patient care.

Detecting is vital, the correction is as much a science and art. That is why we take Structural Films, most conventional chiropractors DO NOT take films anymore. Again, the more specific we are the less force we need to use and results tend to speak for themselves.

Also the hand held instrument delivers forces from mere (3-4) ounces to 40 pounds per square inch - very specific. Also the speed in which that specific force is delivered resonates (beneficial)  with the tissues of the body, mainly your nervous system and ligaments.

And, I know people are hesitant to go to a Conventional Chiropractor because of unnecessary worry about aggressive manipulation - since you have experienced Structural Chiropractic or now know about about our gentle specific correction, when people ask about our office you can honestly say we are gentle and specific - different than most conventional chiropractors.

Who should be our patient?
Patients who have periodic reoccurring symptoms, chronic patients, and those who have been to other conventional chiropractors and/or physical therapists, and have not experienced significant correction.

Many Secondary Conditions, such as; back pain, neck pain, sciatica, headaches and TMJ have been helped by correcting abnormal structure.

Plus, our technique gets results, in  my not so humble opinion.
Have a GREAT Day!

Neck Pain: Conventional vs New Method

Most folks who have neck pain in West Hartford have had neck problems for months or years. It usually started off as muscle soreness or stiffness occasionally and as time progressed the symptoms usually become more frequent and pain becomes greater. From the once-in-a while pain to constant pain in the neck.

Some even experience pain in their arms traveling down to their fingers. Weakness, pins and needles, even in painful when sneezing or coughing. When you dread sneezing because of the pain, you have a serious problem that will get worse if not attended to properly.

Conventional solutions or common ways to deal with neck pain only address the symptoms or pain, which is all well and good and does not address normal spinal structure. For example;

  1. OTC or over -the - counter pills, kill pain temporarily and do not address correcting the structural problem.
  2. Anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxers, kill pain and relax muscles. Muscles are tight because they are trying to  protect against further damage - it's your bodies way of stabilizing a problem area.
  3. PT and Conventional chiropractic - all good people and have three goals they are; decrease pain, increases how you move and decrease spasm - all well and good, and does not address abnormal structure.
  4. Nerve injections if the first three are of little help - then pain meds are shot into the damaged area. Does not address abnormal structure, only looking to temporarily decrease pain
  5. Surgery, from a disc ectomy (removal of the disc) to fusions with plates, screws and rods. Usually one surgery will  lead to further surgeries down the road. This does address abnormal structure. Recovery time is usually a few weeks to many months.
The five conventional solutions are used all the time with vary amounts of success, you see if you feel better than that is counted as success, even though your structure was not corrected and the pain returns again, and again and again, so you do the above solutions over and over again.

Our focus at Advanced Chiropractic in West Hartford,is to correct your abnormal structure the first time and show you how to protect your corrected structure so you do not have to deal with neck pain over and over again. Our patients that work with us like that our approach is reasonable and just makes sense.

We look for Anterior Head Syndrome or AHS for short.

AHS has some tell tale indicators; muscle spasm/tension,  Dowagers Hump, compressed or damaged disc, damaged or degenerated bone and nerve impingement syndrome. If you have just one indicator then you have AHS, if you have more than one indicator, this means your AHS is more severe.

As you may of heard, your head weighs 12 - 16 pounds so for every inch your head and shoulders are rounded this puts 10 more pounds of harsh force to your neck structure. In other words because you head has shifted anterior/forward abnormally this rots your spine from the inside out.

No amount of rubbing muscles, electric stim, ultrasound, popping joints, stretching or strengthening muscles will ever correct the abnormal structure. Other health care providers just do not know how and really do not want to - they are happy doing the conventional, it is what it is.

We ONLY correct abnormal structure, not saying there are other approaches out there, it's just we us the Structural Correction approach, which is new to most and different from the conventional.

We do not use aggressive spinal manipulation, we do not have you come in forever or do excessive care and we are not a jack of all trades - meaning we are great at structural correction, not great at pulled muscles.

How is our method is new and different?

Our focus is structural correction, using specific spinal corrections, which is utilized with two different correcting instruments. These instruments are precise and very tolerable to you the patient. Which help you move better, take the pain away and decrease muscle spasm and tension as well as positively activates your nervous system.

The we use Structural rehab to enhance your spinal structure more towards normal, getting to the underlining cause of the problem and along the way we have you do Complementary Recommendations to help with the other 23 hours of the day you are not in our office. This is vital without the Structural Rehab or Complementary Recommendation you will not get the best out of your care. We are a team, so you and I both have to work at this with our best effort and you will be excited with your corrections.

Who should be our patient?

Patients who have periodic reoccurring symptoms, chronic patients, and those who have been to other conventional chiropractors and/or physical therapists, and have not experienced significant correction.

Neck & Back Pain: What To Do?

Neck and Back pain are two common reasons patients seek out any doctor. Commonly neck and back pain are treated by either using medications, injections, Physical Therapy or Conventional Chiropractic and if need be surgeries from minor to major spinal fusions.

There is more than one way to cook an egg.

We use Structural Chiropractic care to detect and then correct a Primary Structural Condition called Anterior Head Syndrome or AHS for short. Because AHS is a Primary Condition it is responsible for many Secondary Conditions - you may know as symptoms, such as Neck and Back Pain.

In many cases, AHS (Anterior Head Syndrome) may be the underlying cause of a large variety of Secondary Conditions. We focus on correcting AHS and can create a plan of care to improve your structure and your health.

AHS causes abnormal pressures on your discs, vertebrae (spine bones), muscles, ligaments and nerves, once we correct AHS this relieves the harsh forces on these inner frame work structures improving your spine and health.

The objective indicators that confirm AHS are the following:

Muscle Tension/Spasm

Dwager's Hump ("Granny Hump")
Compressed (Degenerated) Disc
Nerve Impingement Syndrome

Damaged (Degenerated) Vertebra

There are many ways to deal with secondary conditions our way is to address AHS. We correct AHS with the following:

You see when your head has shifted more than an inch anterior this creates an additional 10 pounds of force, which generates harsh pressures in your spine leading to degeneration, pain and discomfort. What we focus on is correcting you structure back into the normal range this alleviates the harsh pressures allowing your spine to improve and you to regain health. This is how we accomplish our goal of Structural Correction.

AHS can cause these Secondary Conditions:

Neck & Back Pain
Sciatica
Numbness & Tingling
Muscular Spasm
Headaches
Pinched Nerves
Herniated Discs
Degenerated Disc disease
Degenerated joint disease
Poor Posture
Dizziness/vertigo

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

We use:

Specific Spinal Corrections using two specific instruments.

We use Spinal Remodeling Tables for our Structural Rehabilitation.

Finally, we design a Plan of Care that also includes Complementary Recommendations, that enhance your care in our office and then help you Protect your correction.

What we don't do is just as important as what we do, you need to know so you can make an informed decision.

We do not use aggressive spinal manipulations
We do not have you "come forever"
We do not ask you to "believe" in chiropractic
And we do not claim to cure everything

We focus on correcting abnormal Primary Structural Conditions of your spine called AHS (Anterior Head Syndrome).

Have a GREAT Day!

What About Massage?

Advanced Chiropractic of West Hartford, as you know is  NOT a conventional Chiropractic office - conventional chiropractors are nice folks and I am not saying we are better - just very different. Most of the chiropractors in West Hartford are what I define as conventional (they look to decrease pain, increase movement and decrease muscle spasm - all well and good).

Conventional Chiropractors and Massage therapist basically do the same thing, they make you feel better and move better and who doesn't like a good rub down?

When a patient asks, "What about massage"? I tell them I am all for a certain focus of massage that COMPLEMENTS what we do in our office for YOU. Not all massages have the same focus and some massage is worthless to what we are trying to achieve with your spine - getting you back into normal range.

I know several Massage Therapist that know that we are the only Structural Chiropractic office in town and know that what we are doing is different than massage and traditional chiropractic, so we complement and enhance both what we are doing and what the massage therapist does.

I want our patients to use myostructural corrective massage, and only a handful do this very well in our area. Basically this really works your muscles in a dynamic way - not just passively laying on a table.  And because we are working with your nervous system, skeletal system and your ligaments, we cannot forget the muscles - this focus complements what we do, and I recommend this work.

Also many traditional or conventional chiropractors try to be a jack of all trades and use massage techniques or massage machines to "minic" a great massage therapist who focus on myostructural massage.  We do not do this, as you know - let the experts do what they do best.

That is why I do not try and mimic massage therapy and why I refer you to who I think is BEST for your specific case.

Many things are done by healthcare professionals, just because they can or can bill insurance for their services and I am not saying they are not good or they are doing anything against the law, they are allowed. I am in the belief that you CAN'T KNOW IT ALL and that no one fits a one size fits all - especially when it comes to health.

If you just want a relaxation massage - just about anyone is good - want something specific and beneficial to your long lasting health - YOU must choose wisely, and we can help.

Ask us who we like and why.

Have a GREAT Day!

Structural Rehabilitation: Why?

As you know, we are NOT a conventional Chiropractic office - conventional chiropractors are nice folks and I am not saying we are better - just very different. Most of the chiropractors in West Hartford are what I define as conventional (they look to decrease pain, increase movement and decrease muscle spasm - all well and good).
So why then does a Structural Chiropractor (only a handful in the country do what I do) use Structural Rehabilitation along with Complementary Recommendations? Plain and simple; If

Results Matter Then So Does The Technique.
Our goal is to correct or at least improve your structure closer to the normal range. This is important because no one wants that rounded shoulder or '
Granny Hump " appearance.  Not only is this unattractive it is also abnormal and will lead to twice the normal rate in spinal degeneration - which then leads to Secondary Conditions of back, neck pain, headaches, migraines, and many others.

Remember normal ranges are found in every body function from eye sight to cholesterol levels and your spine.

How Strong Is Your Foundation
So when we get your spine closer to normal this will give you the appealing symmetry with out the Granny Hump AND not only help you to feel better, but help slow down the degeneration of your spine.
Conventional Chiropractic DOES NOT move the spine closer to normal - our focus is to Detect and then Correct and Structural abnormalities that we find with our Three Scientific Objective Indicators that you or any healthcare professional that knows normal anatomy would agree is not normal.
The structural rehab is designed to concentrate our efforts on changing the ligaments. We all learned the Ligaments hold the vertebrae or spinal bones together and are usually injured and require our specific care for structural correction closer to normal range.
That is the why our care includes Structural Rehab and Complementary Recommendations.

Facts & Myths About Omega-3 Oil

This is an article I shared with West Hartford Patch: http://westhartford.patch.com/groups/dr-chris-chases-blog/p/facts--myths-about-omega3-oil_82c04d58

A recent study has attempted to link people ingesting omega-3 (not specifying the source or the quality level) with prostate cancer. Like most things in life, the storyline and the truth are usually worlds apart.

It appears that study didn't look at other factors such as lifestyle, medications, etc. It simply is suggesting that folks who have omega-3 in their body also, as well as blood, and most other goodies found in the human body, also had a bump in prostate cancer. Basically, the quality of this study is like saying, "People who breathe air also end up eventually dying." In other words, most folks looking at this study are looking at it as they did when a study came out suggesting that fiber is not necessary in one's diet. That was later shown to be very incorrect (LOL).

The American Heart Association, along with every reputable health care professional on the planet, agree that omega-3 oil is a critical component to good health. The list of benefits is quite extensive.

When it comes to nutritional supplements, most studies reach for the quality-challenged selection that you would find a large discount department store. Why? Because they're assuming that this is what most consumers purchase. For example, in a study on the merits of taking a multi-vitamin, the brands they chose to use for their "analysis" were the inexpensive nationally known names that were and are commonly advertised on television, and of course, available at your local drugstore.

Any reasonably intelligent person can tell you that there is a big difference between the beef you get when you purchase a .99 cent burger at any given fast food joint and the quality of beef you would find at a decent steakhouse. The difference is huge.

When it comes to fish oil, the differences are even greater. Quality factors include where the fish is raised, how the oil is extracted, how it is filtered, encapsulated, etc. In other words, EVERYTHING matters. The point here is that - even if this study was truly respectable, and even if the oil was the culprit, the fact of the matter is that putting low-end omega-3 oil in your body is like eating an unwashed, non-organic strawberry that has been sprayed with pesticides, cow manure, and touched by many dirty human hands.

One of the most critical factors when it comes to selecting a omega-3 product is where the fish are raised. Are they farm-raised fish - which are fed a diet of breadcrumbs, byproducts and fillers OR are they sourced from pristine waters, having been raised in a natural environment, on a diet from their natural habitat?

Another critical factor is how the oil is processed. Would you drink water that left a water treatment plant unfiltered (i.e. toilet water)? Of course not. Only the finest oils go through a high-level filtration process called MOLECULAR DISTILLATION. This takes an already incredible oil, and then filters out anything and everything that may have made its way into the fish's body - so that you are left with pure liquid gold.

At Advanced Chiropractic we carry only the finest omega-3 oil available anywhere. It is sourced from the best sources and is molecularly distilled. Omega-3 oil is a critical component of good health. Sure - you could eat a couple of large daily servings of wild cold water fish (ocean - not lake, river, stream or pond), but that is hardly realistic.

One final word on this matter: Omega-3 oil delivers so many positives to the human body, that - to some folks in the health care community, it is more of a threat than it is a benefit. If you could truly prove that the American Heart Association, Dr. Weil, Dr. Oz and pretty much every celebrity and reputable non-celebrity health care profession in the world was WRONG about their positive endorsement of omega-3 oil, then you could probably make a very strong case for other prescription products designed to treat a world of conditions.

If I could prove that all produce was bad for you (including all organic produce), then I could make a very strong case why you should buy my "Super-Duper Veggie & Fruit Pill."

People ask me, "Dr. Chris why do you write about nutrition"?

As a Structural chiropractor, which is different than convential chiropractic, we are focused on detecting and then correcting abnormal shifts of the spine that adversely affect your spine, nerves and spinal cord. Anything that complements our care we recommend to our patients - one of these recommendations is a healthy diet, including Omega-3 fish oils.

This helps with patient outcomes and if results matter than so does technique.

Have a GREAT Day!
